Freespace? X3? Galactic Civilizations II? What is the best Space game out there?

I am fairly new to space oriented games. Recently Ive been fascinated with space and what is out there and would like a cool game that enhances this feeling of awe and epic size. X3 looks to be about the best graphics out there but was worried about the story and bugs that shipped with it. Galactic Civilizations got great reviews but from what I saw, there is no actual flying around. Its all done on some 2-D, wanna be 3-D, map. Correct me if I m wrong about GCII please. Freespace seems to have a good story but is a little dated. If I could put all three together I think Id have the game I want. Any opinions on these titles and any other recommendations you feel strong about? Basically, I want to see a star way off in the distance, travel to that star, kill a couple space pirates along the way, mine resources in that area, and trade with some new life form previously unknown before. Buy some new alien technology to add to my ship and head on back to civilization. All while being amazed at the life like planets and environments. Anything out there like this?

Edit: How about Freelancer, sounds good from what Ive heard so far.

Homeworld has a good sensation of space. But my all time fav is Star Control 2. Way out of date graphics but outstanding gameplay and it's free!!! Google The Ur-Quan Masters and you should be able to find a suitable download.  I think it was a sourceforge.net address............maybe.Freespace? X3? Galactic Civilizations II? I'm a huge GalCiv 2 fan, but it's more of a game of politics than spaceship fighting etc.
I've played X3, it's really good if you have the specs for it.

Good find, you might also check out the older Wingcommander/Privateer games as well as Hardwar.

Independence War 2, which is an open ended freeroaming kind of space sim which still looks pretty good and is one of my favourites.

Freespace 2. Amazing game. The size of the battles is just huge. I think there is a high def pack for it to make it look better as well.

X3 is VERY complex and doesn't tell you anything. To play it you need 1 window playeing and 1 window of their forums asking wtf to do every 5 minutes. Story sucks as well.

Gal Civ 2 is fun but gets boring to fast.

Freelancer is good arcade fun. I mainly played online which was very very fun. Made a few friends and played with them. Lots of mods for it too.
The games you listed cannot be compared really. Galactic Civilizations II is more about building your empire, and is a strategy game. X3 is very oriented on trading and building your economy, but you still get to fly a ship and shoot it, although this game requires alot of dedication and patience, I don't suggest it for someone new to the genre. Freespace is your best bet, because that the game people think when they say ''space sim'', not only that, it's definately the best one. I suggest you try out Freespace 2 first, then Independance War 2, then if you like those, play their first editions, because they really aren't that much outdated, and are still very enjoyable(I heard somewhere that abandonware is now ''legal'', so you might try some of those sites, I doubt you can still find them in stores). One of the newer games I would suggest is definately Freelancer. Those are the three games you must try.

Also, there is the newest game Darkstar One, although it is fun, it gets a boring fast. Awesome cinematics tho. Or you can wait for Star Trek: Legacy coming out next week.
played X3, which is practically an economy/trading simulation with combat thrown in. You're building your fleet, however it's not an RTS. Quite hard to control more than 1 ship during battles albeit it's possible. X3 is about gathering cash and resources. graphics are v. nice
If you want to fly, check out Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos or Starshatter.

If you want fleet actions, check out NEXUS.

Homeworld sucks. Bog standard RTS clickfest with little or no thought required. Probably why it sold so well.
Bogaty? How come you're so damn fine?
Well, my all-time favorite is Tie Fighter. However, if we are talking about more recent additions to the genre, I gotta go with:Homeworld
Homeworld: Cataclysm
Homeworld 2
Independence War 2
Galactic Civilizations (if you like turn-based)
X3 (I am sure this would be fun if only you could get into it lol)
Thxs for the responses and recommendations. I picked up X3 for 19.99 and the graphics just blew me away on the demo. Also, came with some mini xpac Bala Gi Research so hopefully fixes some of the issues that seemed to have plagued its launch. So far, the story seems weak but at least better than I expected. And no instruction booklet! I heard there was supposed to be a 72-page manual, looks like all online now. Not the same as having the booklet right in front of me, especially for this complicated game. Seems like this genre is a bit lacking. Im not a big star trek fan, and I dont really see anything coming out soon thats talked about much. Hopefully a crazy successful game comes to this genre (like WoW big) b/c this is by far the most fascinating environment. Thxs again!
D12, it sounds like you're looking for a space sim, where some of ther games you mentioned are RTS, or TBS.

Recent episodes in the genre are Darstar One (great graphics, not a great story or sim)...

...a few years old is Freelancer, which I think is pretty decent, but you do not get a lot of the sim adrenaline as the control interface is strictly mouse and keyboard, no joysticks allowed; a lot like GTAII in space, and missions can become redundant after a while; still, plenty of various weapons and ships to buy, and systems and planets to check out....

...even older, but obtainable, and worth the small amount of cash is Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, decent story, plent of ships (when you include the simulator room, which has all ships types and classes unlocked for selection, and you can build your own scenario)...

...the unequivocal champ is Freespace 2, the problem is, people know it; copies are available on Amazon, but they are $100 or $120 new, and $50 for used copies...

...good hunting... - Repsectfully, GulliverJr.
Eve Online!!!!

Seriously, Eve online takes every single thing form all those games and puts it into MMO mode. I really cannot explain whats its like to play in a living breathing universe so you should just try it yourself, but I warn you, there is a STEEP learning curve but you'll catch on eventually. But because of this, it keeps all the noob twelve year olds out of the game. Seriously this game has like the most mature community of any MMO I've ever played, and I've played a lot.

One mroe thing: The expansion packs are free and one is currently being updated into the servers as we speak, and it will change many thihngs in the gameplay.

In any case, If anyone here feels like joining Eve Online, drop me an evemail and I'll introduce you to the corporation I'm in, which specializes in teaching new players the ins and outs of the game :)

i say try homeworld 1 %26 2. they are some of the legends like freelancer that make a good space sim. it's an RTS type but its very good and tons of strategy needed at times.
Im telling you, man...go check out Independence War 2.  Its a spaceflight-sim.Beautiful visuals, open-ended space pirate gameplay, good story, awesome cinematics, long playtime, cool physics, awesome ships, etc.If you want strategy, go get any of the Homeworld games.

If only they'd had boarding parties...
I picked up NEXUS: The Jupiter Incident, and loved it at first but got bored with the slow battles, everything else in the game is realy good but fighting is just painfull. The attention to detail on the ships and equipment is good, but you cant mod anything only take it off or put in on.
Freelancer
X3 has had heaps of patches, so bugs are much less of an issue than before.

The current patch version (v2.0.1 or so) removes starforce from the game for you as well. If you buy an earlier version then patch to 2.0.1, the starforce drivers will need to be removed manually - easily done.

In terms of X3 as a game, it's very complex and deep. Probably take a few hours of acclimatising, and read the manual if you can (yes it's not a very good manual but better than nothing). If all else fails, it's great to look at, and the scope is huge.
I think that a Freespace 3 will be the best of all. I love Freespace 2, I already finish it 3 times. I also liked Freelancer, is good but not as much as Freespace. I also have played SPace interceptor, but that one was a waste of time. I like rogue squadrom very much, but this game isn't exaclty in the same clasification.

I tried to play Independence day but I didn't understand the game and a left it. I also have X2, but I haven't play it yet. Right now I'm starting to play homeworld, and I have a question about this game: Why gamespot guys has this game like a unreleased game?.

I think Homeworld is a good one, but old and a more difficult to control de ship. I'm thinking in buy Darkstar one. Anybody has this game? do you recomend it?

To me, the best of all is FREESPACE 2 but play it with the INFERNO MOD, je je je
