Anyone remember or still play Descent: Freespace?

I reinstalled the game yesterday and was playing through the campaign.  Eight years later, its still a great game.  The dogfighting is intense and assaulting capital ships is still a blast.  Anyone else still play the game from time to time?Anyone remember or still play Descent: Freespace?
Play Freespace 2, it is superior not to mention the mod community already released the full modded over campaign of Freespace 1 and its expansion, including all missions, ships, voice acting, cut scenes, weapons etc.. Anyone remember or still play Descent: Freespace?
Freespace and Freespace 2 are some of my all time favorite games, up there with the likes of Deus Ex and Half Life. I might have to load it up for a replay now that you mention it.
subzero's right - if you've got freespace 2 you can head over to the hard-light forums and reap the fruits of the Source Code Project - makes Freespace 1 and 2 so pretty your monitor will shoot sparks and your vid card will melt in a sad puddle. awesome.  Takes some research to get everything up and running but its worth it. http://www.hard-light.net/
If you only want to download FreeSpace 2 SCP, and not have to browse the Hard Light Forums for it (though if you're genuinely interested, I suggest you do), you can take the shortcut and go to the downloads section of the Source Code Project Homepage, and for the latest Media VPs, you can go to the Freespace Upgrade Forum.

Thought I should repost my original post on what they have done with Freespace 2 in the mod community. It begins and ends with Freespace 2....  The best space sim of all time... (on a side note X3 is more of a empire building game, there is combat but you will spend more time trading, building, or exploring.. It is still a great game now that its Starforce free)Freespace 2 is a free download at www.the-underdogs.info (it is a free and legal download now, and underdogs is cited by wikipedia as a safe source)..Also www.Hard-light.net is the modding website for Freespace 2..  It is a massive modding community that has lasted sense it was released...  There is also the bit torrent link to the game http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39499.0.html... It incldues the fully graphically modded version that looks great even by todays standards.. It comes with all the cutscnese voice acting with the original campaign..  As a added bonus they have added the fully modded over Freespace 1 campaigns with the cutscenes and voice acting, as well as all the ships etc.. The campaign also comes with the great user campaign called Derelict (45+ missions all with voice acting).. It is a very good game.. I highly suggest this should be your first choice... Specially when its free...WHY you should get it... http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/freespace2/review.html and http://www.gamespot.com/features/6139782/index.html?q=Freespace%202 This is just a taste on how good the game looks right now for being released in 1999 with the mods..also this website http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page will answer any questions on just about anything in Freespace 2 from stories, ships, to modding and the source code project... also forgot to mention:List of good campaigns made for freespace 2:Sol A History (40 missions, fully modded ships in different designs, explains to what happens to earth after they lose contact with the forces that are in Freespace 2)Inferno (linked to Sol A history as the full mod, but takes place in the future when Sol A meets Freespace 2's forces, as well as the new shivans)Derelict (great 50+ mission campaign ALL with voice acting)Homesick (great game where your trying to fly for your life to escape a chase, 35+ missions or so)Sync (very interesting game that is a mystery in the making, 35+ missions)Transcend (another mystery like campaign, 40 missions)babylon 5 campaign and full mod 30 missions +Freespace Port project (original Freespace 1 campaigns ported over to Freespace 2, as well as all the models, cutscenes and voice acting)  There are several others that are of this size and quality are out as well that I can't remember off the top of my head..  That being said Freespace 2 IS the best space sim, no space sim I have seen has been this heavily modded nor has this much content, NOT even close.

After I download the torrent, do I need to download any of the updates on this page?

You dont need to but you should.

Thanks buddy. I'll have to try this one out. I've heard good things about it.

Wow this game brings back memories.. it was good. Been a long time since I played it.
Wow...  you guys are my heroes.  I had been wanting this game for so long but had never found a copy.  I had no IDEA that it was open source now.

There goes my productivity for the week...

I%26#39;m still playing it. Despite what you might think I don%26#39;t mind the aged graphics, it%26#39;s still a good a game as ever. I only wish someone will see the gap it left behind and make another one.
I remember buying Freespace merely by chance. I went into the store looking for something completely different. I was on my way out and saw Freespace sitting on the shelf, on sale for about 30 bucks. I looked at it, and it seemed pretty cool, so I figured ''What the hell'' and bought it. Best random purchase I ever made. I still play the game now and then, even after having it for nearly 8 years. There%26#39;s still a tiny glimmer of hope inside me that someday, somewhere, somebody will find a way to continue the franchise...
as odd as this sounds, the best thing i love about Freespace 2 is actually the story, not the combat ( although that also is top-notched ). the way the game narrates its story really gives me the feeling that i am part of the galactic epic riddled with all sorts of transcendental symbols ( i was gonna say modernist, but meh ). i don%26#39;t know if this is ironic.......but the only truly gripping story to me is that of a space sim. :)that%26#39;s why i never went back again.....coz i doubt a mod community can give me that feeling. combat, yes, more than possible. but not the story. not the shivans.....not the lost generation.

Doesn't sound strange at all. The story was one of the central reasons I was so into the game.
wow, perhaps i will have to reinstall.   Yup, ahead of its time from the start, and will mega AA and high res, i%26#39;m sure it still looks good.

aww freespace. my dad bought a computer for ''school work''. he worked in gateway ireland before they closed down. they had a games pack with freespace, the neverhood, thief 1 and a couple of others. we plonked in freespace (which ate my entire HDD practically) and watched the intro. lets just say that after that my PS1 gathered dust. what a game.....what a reintroduction to PC gaming. a couple of years later i gor FS2. amazingly the sequal was actually better in every single way (imho at least). both are absolutely brilliant games though. if u havent played em then do so now. if there legitely free then theres no excuse. both classics.god i miss interplay.
