If the only reason you want the computer is to play games, then just get a desktop. You can get them cheaper for better stats then a lab-top.If you want a lab-top that can run all the modern stuff plus the ''on the horizon'' games, you'll need to push out quite a bit of cash. On top of that, you can't really update the hardware so what you get is what your stuck with. I have a lab-top for University but I also have Oblivion on it for when the lectures get to long and boring. :) Would you sugest it?
Well it really depends how deep your wallet is, you can get one heck of a gaming laptop from places like alien ware or voodoo and while they are expensive they are portable and can funtion for other purposes as well..but for just a raw gaming machine..you probally can't do better or cheaper than a desktop. Depends on personal preferance really. P.S. Think of the heating as a..sort of heat massage ^^
As someone who has attended a few LAN parties, I can assure you that transporting your PC really isn't that hard if you plan ahead. Make sure all cables and components are well-secured inside the case (with regards to airflow, of course), and set the system up in a location that gives you easy access to the cables in the back. If you spend a little time making sure the cables behind your desk are organized when you set up your system, you'll save yourself a lot of headaches later on.
The rest of the components are portable enough as well. An LCD monitor -- even a 20+'' widescreen -- is a piece of cake to port around. If an LCD isn't an option, you could even just surf Craigslist or even check out local thrift stores for a secondary CRT to just keep wherever else you're planning on setting up your system. And I've always just stuffed my keyboard, mouse, headset and cables into a recycled plastic grocery bag; there's no need to get all fancy with it.
Also, Antec used to make a carrying strap for PCs (which definitely made my life a lot easier). Anyone know if this product is still around?
